Your Questions Answered (Part 1)

Happy Easter Week, everyone! We are all still a little on the sick side over here, our colds are totally overstaying their welcome.

(Thanks for the cute H&M dress, Uncle Zach!)

I wanted to take the time (while working from my sick-couch-bed watching it SNOW) to answer some questions that I have gotten via email or comments.

What do I do for a living?
I work from home as a marketing strategist for a digital marketing agency based out of FL. When we lived there, I worked in the office every day, but when we relocated to GA, I ended up keeping my same job/position but work remotely. I travel once a month or every other month for a few days to the office or to client meetings. It was such a blessing once Harper came along, it is amazing getting to be home with her during the day, but as you can imagine, it's also a complete shitshow half the time. I've gotten a lot of emails about tips for working from home with your kids, my best advice would be to wake up extra early, don't even count how many cups of coffee you end up drinking & stay as organized as possible. (This is also the reason that I am years behind on emails, so if you have sent me one & I haven't replied, PLEASE FORGIVE ME.)

Where do I buy most of Harper's headbands & how do I organize them?
I buy most of Harper's headbands & bows on Etsy. I usually seek shops that have something similar to what I am looking for & then request for them to make custom items for me to match whatever outfit I have in mind. Other times I just come across ones that are already awesome & then I have to hunt for an outfit to match :) Up until recently her headbands were scattered all over the house (and the diaper bag) but I have finally organized them into these awesome glass canisters! Much easier to find what I'm looking for & oh, so cute.

Keep an eye out on Instagram (@jlgarvin) for a seriously awesome headband giveaway that is in the works.

What is my everyday style & skincare/makeup routine?
Well, this is embarrassing. I work from home, which means on a normal day it consists of a sweatshirt, leggings & chapstick. But in the event that we will venture out in public, that doesn't always fly.

Shopping for myself really breaks down to the cost-per-use. Don't laugh, it's totally the way to go. While I would occasionally splurge on an expensive dress or pair of jeans (and by occasionally, I mean once a year, if that) I am much more likely splurge(ish) on comfy clothes. I live in Victoria's Secret sweatshirts, Target long & lean tanks and my favorite Pure Body crews. This is me on a normal weekday, rocking my old cotton capri's from a hundred years ago.

Victoria's Secret Sweatshirts are a little pricey, they are so soft & fit so well! I wear them almost every day, therefore the cost per use is minimal

Also, you'll never be the same after you rock a pair of Pure Body dance pants. I originally bought them to wear home from the hospital after having Harper. I felt them (and their forgiving waist band) in the store & was in love. I recommend them to EVERYONE. Whenever my husband mentions a zombie apocalypse, I just respond with "well I hope I'm at least wearing dance pants." (shout out to my Walking Dead fans!). I save all the fun clothes for the weekends, maxi skirts & colorful v-necks are my fav! And of course, warmer weather means lots of dresses! :)

Makeup & skincare. I've really struggled to find the perfect skincare regimen, although I might almost be there with my recent purchases of some awesome Philosophy products. I realized one day that every.single.product that I've ever bought from Philosophy has blown my mind & always ends up being my favorite. I've recently bought some of the skincare products (moisturizer, cleanser, etc.) so we'll see how they stack up! :)

My go-to makeup item is easily the Philosophy Supernatural Airbrush (in bronze). If I could only have one thing (other than chapstick) I would pick this. I was introduced to it probably 8 years ago & have never looked back. It's a little pricey, but lasts 3-5 months. I can honestly say that almost every single one of my friends that has seen/tried/heard me rave about mine, has bought it & fallen in love with it. I also use Benefit Porefessional Primer, Laura Mercier Concealer & Nars Bronzer in Casino. I use a random assortment of eyeshadows, blushes & highlighters on occasion. I love love love the eyeliner & mascara that I use, I've tried tons & am positive these are the best. I use L'Oreal Lineur Intense, Buxom Lash Mascara & L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara. I know makeup is totally one of those things where certain products work better for different skin types, but I will rarely try a new product unless I got a great recommendation from someone. (Happy to elaborate more on all of this in another post!)

What is the secret to drawing on my chalkboard & when will I do a tutorial?
I swear there really isn't a secret. I use dry crayola chalk & clean the board with a wet hand towel in between drawings. I have been drawing & taking art classes since I was little, but really it just takes lots of practice & patience. Sometimes I walk away from my board & come back the next day if I feel like it is getting sloppy or if I am struggling.

I still plan to do a tutorial, but things are so crazy with work, Etsy & the kiddo that I just haven't had the time yet. But it's coming! :) Hopefully in the future I will also be able to offer custom prints, but that is still up in the air for the time being.

What are some of the workouts that I do?
If you remember, I hate hate double hate working out. I go for workouts that are QUICK & that I can do at home. I still do the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred, but for the most part, I do Crossfit workouts. (You can find more about working out/losing baby weight in this post).
My go-to workout when I don't have much time & the weather is uncooperative, is what I call the Dirty Thirty.

It's easy, but it sucks. I sometimes switch out squats for lunges or jump squats if I'm feeling ballsy. You'll be surprised how quick this goes & how much you'll feel it the next day! :) You can find some other quick Crossfit-inspired workouts here & here.

How do I make picture/product collages?
I don't use a website to do this, although I think you can make styleboards similar on Polyvore. I search for items that I want & save the images of each item as .PNG files (to keep the background transparent) and then I arrange them & add text using Adobe Illustrator.

This covers a lot of the questions that I had, if you have anything additional, please ask in the comments section of this post & I will do part 2 this week! Hopefully everyone will be back up & running over here soon, we have big plans for Easter & hope to be healthy in time! :)

  1. So basically, what you're saying is that I can buy a $300 Anthro dress and as long as I wear it every other week we're golden? Sounds really damn good to me.

    2. Good LAWD have mercy you got a lot of responses to this blog post! lol! Anyway, just got my maternity Gap yoga pants today! I love them! They are a bit long though. :-( I am really long waisted with shorter legs. But the fit is nice. What size do you buy in the dance pants? extra small? You seem like you might be a bit smaller than me so I should get a small (that's what I got it the mat pants). Can't wait to see the next blog!! :-)))

I'm hoping to get back into it by going back to get my MBA and hopefully find something where I can work at home and make the big bucks and still be able to look after my munchkin!

I've gotten up at 5am to work before but usually sleep til 7 if the baby was up a lot at night (she's never slept through the night...ay ay ay). So yeah - just wondering how you get it all done and what a day in the life looks like for you! Thanks! :)

    2. I would love to see a daily schedule! I'm trying to figure a way to work from home but I worry about how much actual 'work' I'd get done with a 5 month old :/ Do you work a straight 8 hours or just where you can find the time between naps, etc? Thanks!

      Delete
    3. Please do post a schedule. I want to work from home but my boss is skeptical how much work I can get done with a mobile child and is insisting it is only possible with a nanny or mother's helper in the house too.

    4. Thanks for the response! I was up at 6am today too for work. It's tough - but I LOVE being home with her. Can't wait to read your post on what your day looks like! Also feel free to send any work from home tips you have our way, haha! (Like are you able to cook dinner every night or do you guys typically go out? That's something I majorly struggle with. On busy work days I do not cook...slower days I can but I've never really been that into cooking).

  18. That first picture of Harper is just beautiful. How to you handle the postpartum hair issues? I have long hair and I feel like it is falling out constantly and I have to wear it up all the time because my son will grab it all the time. I try so hard to make it cute but I always end up throwing it up. Yours always looks so cute!

    1. thank you!! Oh postpartum hair, just remember that it eventually stops falling out! ;) I didn't realize until my hair started growing back that I lost most of it around my hairline. I wore it up in top knots almost every day when it was falling out but now that it is growing back, it's best to keep it down & curly to hide the crazy flyaways!

My best friends' baby girl is turning 1 year old in April. She's my "niece" and I have NO idea what to get for a 1 year old. I want something that she will love and can get many uses out of! Anyone can suggest something. That would be rad.

    1. Thank you! VS is totally my guilty pleasure, cost per use is totally the way to go! And for first birthday gifts, one of the push around Radio Flyer Wagons (harper loves hers!) or a baby swing for outside would be great gifts! 23. Do you count calories are just eat small portions?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Definitely no calorie counting, I guess you could say I eat small portions, but I eat often. I really like bland foods & could eat the same stuff every day (weird, I know) so I typically eat maybe a piece of peanut butter toast & a banana for breakfast, snacks are always apple slices w/peanut butter, strawberry frozen fruit bars or grapes, usually tuna or turkey for lunch & then dinner is usually homemade pasta or mexican food of some sort.

      Delete
    2. My problem is definitely portion control, I need to start eating more often and smaller portions, but with two little ones you just forget thanks for the tips!

  72. Hi! I've been following your blog for a while now and love your creativity and style! I know you just answered a tone of questions but I have a few more (sorry). I'm a teacher of 3rd graders and I saw you reading the "The Night Before St. Patrick's Day" to Harper (super cute name by the way) and I was wondering if you thought it was a good book? I love reading holiday type books to the school and the kids really love it too!! So I'm always looking for new holiday books. Another very random question is what is your iPhone case? In the picture you took of yourself in what you wear normally throughout the week it looks like the case is wood. I know you like Etsy and that there are some wood cases from there so I was wondering if that is where you got it? And if so which Etsy shop? Thank you for sharing your projects, your family, and your life! Take care and hope everyone gets better soon (working at a school I know that there is A LOT of stuff going around)!

    2. Thank you Farrah Miller! I've seen a lot of the "Night Before" series on Amazon but wasn't sure if I should get them or not. There are always so many books that I want to get for my kiddos at school that its hard to pick and choose. So I appreciate your reply!

P.S. I'm totally embarrassed that I said "tone" instead of "ton"- and yes I am teaching the youth of America! It should be noted that I also teach them that teachers/adults are human and that we all make mistakes- which I think is an equally important thing to teach them, especially since I make a lot of mistakes ;)

    3. Ha! I didn't notice, and I'm a literacy tutor. Being a new mom, you just expect to lose a little bit of your mind for awhile.

I'm exciting for my son to be old enough to read the Boxcar Children series. I loved that one when I was little. Enjoy your picks!

  74. I work party time from home and have a six-month-old daughter, and your description of it being a shitshow is completely accurate! On the days I work it looks like a bomb went off in my house! And there are definitely days I am in my yoga pants until bedtime. It's good to know I'm not the only one who finds WAHM-ing it a challenge!

  80. Harper looks adorable in her shirt dress !. I tried unsuccessfully to bid on Sunday, these mummy's were fast!.

Sickness has hit our family too, husband caught a cold and passed it on to us, Sophie is teething too and is miserable, poor babe, hoping we are all feeling better by the weekend.

I am so glad I am not the only zombie loving person out there!, I love anything zombie, Walking Dead - oh my god, best episode ever last Sunday, I cannot wait for next Sunday's, Daryl had better not be killed off, Resident Evil oh yeah, if I had my way I would be hiding tins of food, and building an under ground shelter...just in case... not crazy really...lol

Thank you for the post, your blog has been such a help for me as a new mum. Still working on the wagon, the lake is half frozen...check it out http://www.woodridgelake.com

    Feel better!

  81. Thank you so much for answering our questions! I absolutely love your blog :)
Did you find a solution to Harper's sleep troubles when she was younger? My daughter just turned 4 months. Starting at 2 months, she slept all through the night, but the last week or so she has been waking up every 2-3 hours again. Our schedule/routine hasn't change so I'm not sure what's up, but this momma is tired!
Happy Easter to you and your family; I'm sure Harper has an adorable Easter dress to wear!

  100. Great post! I do have a question for you!
I know you live in Georgia, and your family lives in Iowa. I was curious how you deal with being a younger mom, with a young baby, and living so far away from your family. I live in Georgia as well and stay home with our son, and our families live in Tennessee. It's not as far as Iowa, but feels like it to me! haha I have a hard time coping so far away from our families. We haven't lived here long, so we don't have a lot of friends here and zero family. Is there anything you suggest to make it easier on raising a baby with no family/friends nearby to help out?

  102. Hi Jessica,

Thank you for being such an inspiration in all aspects! You might have already answered this question (regarding picture/product collages) do you recommend other ways to creating these collages other that using adobe and Polyvore? What about a short tutorial on how to do these? Sorry if its too much to ask for!

  103. Do you use the: My go-to makeup item is easily the Philosophy Supernatural Airbrush (in bronze): as a bronzer or all over. I am just wondering if I should get bronze or a lighter color. I am pretty light skinned (probably close to you) BUT have blond hair and no dark features.

  104. I stumbled on your pics and then your blog through Pinterest while you were pregnant and posting the weekly pictures of your the baby's progress. I am in my early 40's, don't have kiddos. But yet I totally love following your posts of your sweet family. Keep up the good work. I saw someone mention a post about your diet...I must have missed that one. I would like to see diet, exercise, crafts, cooking tips, product recommendations (that extend beyond baby items)in addition to your home, hubby and Harper posts.
